Swimming pool not in use for 5 years

The only swimming pool in Chandpur district has been in dilapidated condition for 5 long years. A swimming pool was built in Chandpur 14 years ago at a cost of around Tk 4 crore. Named Arun Nandi Swimming Pool. The swimming pool was officially inaugurated on February 3, 2006. Although it has been in operation for a few years since its inauguration, it is now completely obsolete. The swimming pool water machine has been broken for a long time. Besides, the pool building is dilapidated. The tiles have dried up due to lack of water in the swimming pool. It was as if a haunted atmosphere had been created inside.

According to the relevant sources, the swimming pool has a capacity of 4 lakh gallons of water. From the beginning, the swimming pool has organized training and competitions, but over time, it closes. For the swimming pool, there is its own water machine, which is currently out of order. Besides, Chandpur municipality has arrears of Tk 24 lakh in electricity bill. Due to which the power line of the water machine is disconnected. Not only that, the swimming pool needs new water machines and other equipment to be restarted.

Football players said. Masum Bepari and volleyball player Nazrul Islam Chowdhury said Arun Nandi swimming pool has been constructed at Chandpur Outer Stadium. Construction work has been done in a very beautiful place. But the big thing is that the reason the swimming pool was built, it has no implementation. It has been in a state of disrepair for years. There is no competition, no training. The situation is very bad now. We want our sons and daughters to be reformed as soon as possible. Then they will be able to learn to swim and also take part in competitions.

Abdul Ahad Khan Rahul and Tarun Islam Tamim, swimming trainees at Arun Nandi Swimming Pool, said, "We used to come here to learn swimming. But suddenly the activities of the swimming pool stopped. Which is why we can't learn to swim. There is no water inside the swimming pool, no training facilities. The inside is in an unclean condition. A ghostly atmosphere has been created inside and outside the Arun Nandi swimming pool. We can't even bring our younger siblings here and teach them to swim. We urge the authorities to make the swimming pool operational as soon as possible.

Mizanur Rahman Khan Badal, general secretary of Chandpur Bhai Bhai Sporting Club, said, `Chandpur district is a riverine district. But many boys and girls in Chandpur do not know how to swim. Although a swimming pool has been constructed in the Outer Stadium, it has no activities. The swimming pool has been in disrepair for years. The players and sports organizers demanded that the pool under the supervision of the government, as well as the sports ground in Chandpur, should be strengthened. Sad to say, the swimming pool is dilapidated due to irresponsibility. Now it is enough to stop the whole activity. I appeal to the authorities to repair the swimming pool and bring it back to its former glory’. 

Chandpur District Sports Officer. Tariqul Islam said, `We have already contacted the deputy commissioner about this. The Deputy Commissioner has spoken to LGED and the Department of Public Health. They are thinking of installing a new water machine to activate the swimming pool. The swimming pool is currently closed due to various faults in the swimming pool including the machine. However, we are working hard to get the Arun Nandi swimming pool operational as soon as possible’.
