Thousands of people from at least nine villages needs to cross the Bangshai River, bordering Sakhipur and Basail upazilas of Tangail, for their everyday communication. Their only means of crossing the river is one bamboo-made foot bridge, which is used by people of all ages. This 100 feet bridge is literally uniting the people of the two upazilas.
Upon visiting it was found that the 100-feet bridge is the only means of transportation for thousands of people in several villages including Chakdaha, Rasra, Mirikpur, Chaidampur, Hatibandha, Berbari, Naikanbari, Ratanpur and Kanchanpur of Sakhipur and Basail upazilas along the Bangshai river.
Chakdaha is the only market near these villages. Besides, there is no hat-bazaar within four kilometers of the vicinity. The distance from Bazar to Basail municipal town is about five kilometers. As there is no bridge, in case of emergency one has to walk 10-12 km to reach the city. Especially the passengers going to the hospital and the district town are in extreme distress.
Fazlur Rahman (Faizal), president of Chakdaha Bazar Committee, said that Chakdaha village is very underdeveloped and neglected in the overall development of the upazila. We are in such a dilapidated condition only because of the underdeveloped communication system.
Abbas Ali, a resident of the area, said leaders promised a lot during the election, but no one built the Chakdaha bridge over the Bangshai River. One seat in two upazilas. The house of the present Member of Parliament is in our area. We request him to build this bridge for us.
When asked, Sakhipur Upazila Deputy Assistant Engineer Farid Ahmed said, "It has been proposed to build the bridge in a project called Tangail Project. The sufferings of the people of 2 upazilas will be mitigated once the bridge is built.
Advocate Zoaherul Islam, a local MP, said the people of the area had long demanded that a bridge of about 150 feet over the Bangshai River be built in a very short time. At the same time, a project has been taken up to widen and pave the roads in the area.
