The new Election Commission, headed by retired secretary A.M.M. Nasir Uddin, is set to take the oath of office on Sunday, November 24, just two and a half months after the resignation of the Awal Commission.

Supreme Court Public Relations Officer Shafiqul Islam shared the news on Thursday, November 21, only hours after the new Election Commission was finalized.

According to the decision, the Chief Justice, Syed Refaat Ahmed, will administer the oath to the new Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and four other commissioners at 1:30 PM on Sunday, November 24.

The resignation of the previous Election Commission, led by Habibul Awal, took place on September 5, one month after the Awami League government was overthrown amid a mass uprising led by the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. Following this, President Mohammed Shahabuddin appointed a five-member commission headed by retired secretary A.M.M. Nasir Uddin. This commission will oversee the organization of the upcoming national election.

In addition to CEC A.M.M. Nasir Uddin, the new Election Commission includes:

Former Additional Secretary Anwarul Islam Sarkar
Former District and Sessions Judge Abdur Rahman Masud
Former Joint Secretary Begum Tahmida Ahmed
Retired Brigadier General Abul Fazal Md. Sanaullah
The commission was selected from a list of 10 names proposed by a search committee, as per the provisions established during the Awami League government.

Nasir Uddin, the 14th Chief Election Commissioner of the country, previously served as a member of the Local Government Reform Commission under an interim government.

In his immediate reaction to the appointment, CEC Nasir Uddin stated, “We will do whatever is necessary to ensure a free, fair, and acceptable election, Inshallah. We must fulfill this responsibility properly with everyone’s cooperation.”
