At least two firefighters sustained injuries while dousing a fire that broke out at a building of Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation (BJMC) in Dhaka's Motijheel area.
The fire on the sixth floor of Adamjee Court Building was brought under control two hours after it started around 1:35pm on Monday, said Rasel Shikder, duty officer at the control room of the Fire Service and Civil Defence headquarters.
The fire was yet to be extinguished at 5:30pm, said Anisur Rahman, another firefighter at the control room. Thirteen firefighting units have been working to douse the blaze.
The injured were immediately taken to a health facility for treatment, he added.
Brigadier General Md Sazzad Hussain told media the cause of the fire and amount of damage is yet to be determined. A probe body will be formed to investigate the incident.
He also said: "There is a warehouse on the seventh floor of the building and the fire may have broken out there. BJMC may know about the ownership of the storehouse. Some more time will be needed to extinguish the fire completely, as there were flammable items such as papers in the building. There is nothing to worry about."
He added that BJMC officials had evacuated safely.
A total of 24,074 fire incidents were reported across the country in 2019, as compared to 19,642 incidents in 2018, and 18,015 in 2017.
