The residents of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) were relieved to receive such an assurance from the mouth of Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Tapas five days before Eid that the Qorbani waste would be removed within 24 hours. Many thought that the image of the South would change after the sacrifice, even if it was due to the urge to compete with the North. But what about? After Eid al-Adha, the holidays are over; However, on the first day of work, the stench in the nose as soon as I leave for the office. Boredom accompanies the journey to work at the start of the day.
The mayor left the US to celebrate Eid with assurances and his big assurances are now in the air mixed with the stench of rotten waste. The waste of sacrificial animals is piled up in the alleys of Dhaka South; Old Dhaka is in the most pathetic condition. Due to the capriciousness of the authorities, the stench is so pronounced that residents are unable to get rid of it even by pinching their noses and mouths.
Meanwhile, the eyes of the DSCC waste management department are like tin glasses. Despite showing the real picture of waste management, they claimed that they were able to remove the waste of the sacrificial animals on the day of Eid before the scheduled time as announced by the mayor. In Old Dhaka, many people sacrifice animals on the second or third day of Eid. Waste has accumulated in two such places. DSCC will remove them by Wednesday (June 19) night.
On June 17, the holy Eid-ul-Azha was celebrated across the country. Earlier on June 12, DSCC Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Tapas announced the removal of sacrificial animal waste within 24 hours after visiting the National Eidgah grounds. But before Eid, he went to the United States with his family. From there he connected online and monitored the waste removal activities of 75 wards.
DSCC has 75 wards. Among them, Aga Sadek Road, Bangshal Road, Abdul Hadi Lane, Chankhar Pool Lane, Shikkatuli Lane, Abul Hasnat Road area comprise ward number 33 of DSCC.
On Wednesday (June 19), ward number 33 of DSCC was seen piled up with sacrificial animal waste on Agha Sadek Road here. Garbage is rolling in rain water and spreading on the road. No employee of DSCC waste disposal department was seen. Residents are crossing the area by holding their noses on the road.
Some local residents said that the waste of sacrificial animals in most areas of Old Dhaka has not been removed yet. This waste on Aga Sadek Road is from the first day of Eid. Now the residents of the nearby buildings are unable to open their doors and windows due to the stench of the rotten waste.
However, DSCC ward number 33 councilor Awal Hossain says that all the waste has been removed on the first day of Qorbani in his ward. But many are sacrificing animals on the second or third day without getting kashai.
A similar picture was seen in Ward No. 34 of DSCC. This ward consists of Siddique Bazar, Haji Osman Gani Road, Nazira Bazar Lane, Kazi Abdul Hamid Lane, Kazi Alauddin Road, Fulbaria Old Railway Station area. The waste of sacrificial animals was seen piled up in Kazi Alauddin Road and Siddique Bazar here. Much of the waste has been washed away by the rain water in front of the nearby houses and shops.
Residents of Kazi Ala Uddin Road say that waste is dumped in front of holding number 34 on Kazi Ala Uddin Road throughout the year. Now this place is piled up with the waste of sacrificial animals. However, the head office of the City Corporation is only 200 meters away. The situation is the same in Siddique Bazar. But the city building is on the border of Siddique Bazar.
Besides Ward No. 32 Kazi Zia Uddin Road, Samsabada Lane, Ward No. 31 Kazi Zia Uddin Road, Zindabahar, Maulvi Bazar, Begum Bazar, Armenia Street, Ward No. 27 Orphanage Road, Ward No. 25 Pushparaz Saha Road, Jagannath Saha Road, 62 Sacrificial waste was also seen scattered on the road in Shanirakhra of the ward.
But the public relations department of DSCC says that this time 10 thousand 247 manpower has worked to remove waste from Qorbani hut and Qorbani slaughtered animals. And although a target of 24 hours was given for the removal of sacrificial animal waste, it was completed in 10 hours and 15 minutes on the first day and 59 out of 75 wards were cleared by 5 pm on the second day. Altogether, 17,692 metric tonnes of waste was removed through 3,655 trips till 5pm on Tuesday (June 18).
On Tuesday (June 18) afternoon, Sheikh Fazle Noor Tapas held a press conference by connecting to the online platform through the central control room established in Shitalakshya Hall of Nagar Bhaban of DSCC. In this press conference, he spoke to the journalists about the collective activities to remove the waste generated or generated during the celebration of the holy Eid-ul-Azha.
In response to a question from reporters about the waste lying in several places in the city, Tapas said that the slaughter of sacrificial animals is done at different times. Everyone does it at different times. So many people leave the waste of slaughtered animals after we clean them. There are some isolated incidents like this. Also many people mix the waste of sacrificial animals with the waste of the market. Many sacrifice on the second and third day. But we declare it only after it is 100% clean and the waste of the first day falls in several places and is not removed, which is not correct.
Meanwhile, Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) has a completely opposite picture. Mayor Atiqul Islam managed to keep talking. Visiting the various areas of the north, the sacrificial waste was not seen anywhere. According to the waste management department of the organization, DNCC has been able to remove the sacrificial waste in all wards between 2 pm and 8 pm (in 6 hours) on the day of Eid on the orders of Mayor Atiqul Islam. Similarly, the waste of the second day of Eid has also been removed. On the third day of Eid on Wednesday (June 19), no one sacrificed animals in the city corporation.
