Common people have already started returning home to share the joy of Eid. Various authorities believe that this time 12 million to 30 million people will run to different parts of the country. It is difficult to cope with the pressure of so many people. However, if you perform your duties properly during the Eid journey, the suffering will be reduced a lot. Apart from this, there are no examples of what a modern highway can look like outside or inside the country. And so we need to think and decide how the road system can be.
On Wednesday (June 12), the panelists said these things in RTV's special program 'Ide Gharre Fera'. The program was conducted by Syed Ashiq Rahman.
As a speaker in the event, Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Md. Atiqul Islam, Secretary of Road Transport and Highway Department ABM Amin Ullah Noori, Secretary of Railway Ministry. Md. Humayun Kabir, DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman, senior journalist Masud Kamal, urbanist architect Iqbal Habib and public transport and accident expert Bangladesh University of Engineering (BUET) Professor Dr. Md. Hadiuzzaman.
Prof. Dr. Buet at the event. Md. Hadiuzzaman said, our technical capacity has increased a lot. Because we are now identifying where we have the risk of traffic jams. But this time it has been identified. About 155 points are being threatened with traffic jams. Over the past century there has been a massive expansion of road infrastructure for transportation. But the problem is that the pressure that comes during the short period of Eid, we have a weakness in the capacity of transportation that should have the capacity to take this pressure. Supply (transportation) is less than our demand during Eid.
He said that 10 to 20 percent of people come out of Dhaka during Qurbani Eid compared to fasting Eid. On the other hand, the tide of animal trucks will also enter Dhaka during Eid al-Adha. We see a one-way tide during the fasting Eid, but this time it is two-way. Apart from this, every year before Eid, it is said that unfit vehicles will not be allowed to enter the highway. But we did not see the operation that was supposed to be conducted to control unfit vehicles in Dhaka city. As for us, 30 lakh people will come out, against which there is provision of 8 lakh. What will the remaining 22 million people do? They will be forced to go on the roof of the train, animal truck or on the roof of the bus. That is, they will return home with risk.
Road Transport and Highways Department Secretary ABM Amin Ullah Noori said, last time there was some jam in Chandra. The concerned officials managed it overnight. This time the challenge for us will be Bhogra Mor. Because all the cattle vehicles will enter through Madanpur through Bhogra, and the vehicles from North Bengal will pass through Bhogra. I have held several meetings to resolve traffic congestion at this place.
He said that the meteorological office has said that there will be continuous rain. Rain may cause a little problem in our plans. Many of the plans taken may not materialize.
He also said that it is very sad that trucks are being stopped on the road and animals are being unloaded. We decided not to face the cow market on the road, but we did. These complaints are coming to us, we are taking quick action in this case. But when the haat starts, the people don't obey, and the lessee doesn't do anything. Good management is happening in many places. If some districts can do it, why can't others? However, we are trying our best to make people's Eid journey smooth. That's why I want everyone's help.
Senior journalist Masud Kamal said, I will say in one word - we cannot relieve the suffering during the Eid journey because those who are responsible for relieving the suffering are not fulfilling this responsibility properly. This is the preparation they talk about. There is no preparation any year. Those in charge have said that we are unprepared this year. What is happening with so much preparation? I think those in charge are either negligent or incompetent.
Secretary of the Ministry of Railways in the event. Md. Humayun Kabir said, we can handle 20 to 22 percent of our demand during Eid. That means I can't carry 78 to 80 percent of people. We don't have that number of coaches or trains.
He said, in many cases, our trains going towards North Bengal do not get even an hour's rest. A train takes 10 to 12 hours to go to Panchagarh, there can't be even half an hour to get back after cleaning. Apart from this, Eid special trains have been started from today, so we have installed two extra coaches in some of these trains. We are spending some time here installing these compartments.
Urbanist architect Iqbal Habib said, why are we practically failing to remove the problems identified in traffic congestion. Roads and highways are failing year by year to implement the definition of highway and the law of highway. There are markets at 539 places along the 231 km Dhaka-Chittagong highway, along the highway. But there is no opportunity for it to exist in the highway law. The law says no structure shall be within 50 meters on either side. I think there is a lack of sincerity in solving it.
He said that the haat incident happens every year, it is not the first time this year. If we have to think about it for years. Then those thoughts need to be done in such a way. For example, we built the Dhaka-Mawa highway. Examples of what a modern highway can look like are now not outside but inside the country. And so we need to think and decide how the road system can be.
DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman said that Dhaka Metropolitan Police has many challenges on the occasion of Eid. Among them, the challenge with cow market is more. Dhaka's two city corporations now have 20 cow markets. Each market has different arrangements.
He said, on behalf of DMP, we will try to ensure that vehicles can leave Dhaka easily without any jam. For this we have tried to find out some solutions by analyzing the past problems. Work is going on at various places. Keeping everything in mind we have arranged our plan so that we can let all the vehicles out of Dhaka easily.
Mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation. Atiqul Islam said, the information we have received is about 2.5 million animal sacrifices in the two cities of Dhaka. This incident is one day. In this case, we are told to sacrifice animals at a specific place. But we don't even need 8 hours to clean the dirt in a certain place. But this time the rain will be a big obstacle for us. But this time we have all kinds of preparations.
