Adviser on environment, forest and climate change Syeda Rizwana Hasan said that from October 1, polythene shopping bags and polypropylene bags cannot be kept in supershops. These bags cannot be given to buyers. Alternatively jute and cloth bags will be placed in or in front of the supershop for customers to purchase. Youth and students will be involved to take care of this process.
The environment adviser said these things in the meeting held with the stakeholders to implement the ban on polythene bags in the meeting room of the ministry on Monday.
He said that the issue will be widely publicized in print and electronic media from September 15. Public notice will also be published in newspapers.
The Environment Advisor said that the Ministry of Textiles and Jute will meet with all supershops within a week and take necessary measures to ensure the supply of jute shopping bags. The Department of Environment in association with ESDO will organize a fair for producers of eco-friendly materials, jute or textile bags by September 30. Super shop authorities and producers can discuss their demand and supply in the fair.
The meeting held under the chairmanship of the Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change was attended by additional secretaries of the ministry, director general of the directorate of environment, representatives of other ministries and various super shops.
