Awami League President and former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina
The International Criminal Tribunal has issued an arrest warrant against Awami League President and former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in connection with the July-August crimes against humanity.
He has been ordered to appear before the tribunal by November 18.
Chief Prosecutor Md. Tajul Islam made two applications in this regard. Hearing an application on Thursday, the chairman of the tribunal, Justice Md. A three-member bench headed by Ghulam Mortuza issued an arrest warrant against Sheikh Hasina.
Apart from this, in another petition, an arrest warrant was ordered against 45 people including Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader.
At 11:30 a.m. on this day, the chairman of the International Criminal Tribunal, Justice Md. The chief prosecutor presented the description of all the murders, massacres, extrajudicial killings, pillkhana killings during Sheikh Hasina's dictatorial rule in the bench headed by Ghulam Mortuza in the International Criminal Tribunal.
The chairman of the tribunal, Justice Golam Mortuza Majumdar, came to the International Criminal Tribunal on the first working day after his appointment on October 15. In addition, two members of the tribunal, Justice Md. Shafiul Alam Mahmud and retired District and Sessions Judge Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury came to the tribunal that day.
At this time the Registrar and other officials of the Tribunal welcomed them.
On October 13, the Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal, Advocate Tajul Islam, informed that the assistance of Interpol was sought to bring back the fugitives including Sheikh Hasina.
The then Awami League government formed the International Criminal Tribunal in 2010 to try those accused of crimes against humanity in 1971. The tribunal pronounced punishment against several leaders of Jamaat-BNP and it was executed.
Sheikh Hasina fled the country in the face of the student movement. Sheikh Hasina government carried out indiscriminate killings to stop this movement of anti-discrimination students. About one and a half thousand people lost their lives in this movement. After the fall of Sheikh Hasina, the Nobel Peace Prize winner came to the government. Interim government led by Muhammad Yunus. It was after taking over that the decision was made to prosecute the July-August massacre.
Considering the hundreds of deaths during the student movement as 'genocide', several complaints have already been submitted to the International Tribunal for trial against dozens of people of the ousted government including Sheikh Hasina.
