Are you not one of the many people who love to garden but don’t have the space to do so. Gardening has been proven to improve one’s health and overall well-being. It is rewarding because you actually get the opportunity to benefit from your hard work.
Growing your own food is also a great way to eliminate the amount of harmful toxins you put into your body. It is the perfect opportunity to cut the pesticides out of your food and out of your body. When you purchase produce from grocery stores, they usually have less nutrients because they have traveled many miles to get to your supermarket. Creating a garden is the only way to know you are eating completely GMO free and organic food.
If everyone were to adopt these simple gardening practices, we would be that small step closer to becoming self-sufficient. Unfortunately, too many people think you need a huge yard and lots of land to achieve a garden, but in reality that is not the case. Here are a few simple DIY projects for anyone looking to garden in a small space.
Plant Indoors
As long as you have windows, you can grow produce indoors. There are plenty of different vegetables and herbs that can prosper with the light from a window. Certain types of tomatoes can grow well in hanging baskets in front of windows. Many people have also found luck growing herbs in small containers on windowsills. A great DIY project is to secure mason jars to a piece to plywood on a wall that gets plenty of sunlight.
Garden Vertically
Use a pallet to plant produce vertically. You can grow lettuce in a pallet on your balcony during the warmer months. The great things about pallets is that they can be found in the back of almost any hardware store or factory. Simply nail a piece of wood on the bottom of each step of the pallet and place soil and seeds. Keep this on your balcony and don’t forget to water it.
Use Planter Boxes
Planter boxes can be placed on outside windowsills or ledges outside of your window. These boxes will not take up any space that you need and they provide maximum amounts of sunlight for your garden. To water your plants, all you need to do is open the window and pour in some water. Planter boxes can easily be made DIY with just a few pieces of wood and some nails.
Community Gardens
Most neighborhoods have community gardens where you can purchase a small plot of land to start your own garden. If you cannot find a community garden in your area, you can start one. Go in with a few friends to buy a little area of land and then charge others to plant there. This is a great way to make a profit and encourage others to grow their own food.
Pots Are Your Best Friend
When you live in a small apartment or a house with very little to no land, post and containers will be your number one go to for planting. There are many different kinds of vegetables that grown in a pot or container on your porch or small patch of grass. Vegetables such as broccoli, carrots, squash, cucumbers and much more can live and grow in pots of soil.
If you are concerned for your health and want to stop putting toxins and pesticides into your body, having your own garden can be a great place to start. Gardening will help you eat better and feel better, no matter how much space you have. Flowers always make people better, happier, and more helpful; they are sunshine, food and medicine for the soul.
