Due to the active monsoon, it has been raining continuously for the past few days in various districts of the country including the capital. The Meteorological Department has predicted that this trend of rainfall may increase in the next 24 hours. Meanwhile, the water levels of some rivers have already started rising due to heavy rains. In this situation, there is a threat of flooding in the lower areas of four districts of the country.

A message issued by the Water Development Board's Flood Forecasting and Warning Center on Friday (September 27) said that in the next 24 hours, some low-lying areas may be flooded in addition to the Char areas of Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur and Kurigram.

Highlighting the current condition of the country's rivers and streams amid the rains, the executive engineer of Paubo Sardar Udar Rahman said that at present the water level of all the main rivers and streams of the country is flowing below the boundary line. However, the water in Teesta and Dharla rivers in Rangpur division is increasing rapidly. On the other hand the water of Dudhkumar River is flat and stable and flows below the Vipatseema.

The Flood Forecasting and Warning Center said, according to the information of meteorological agencies, there is a possibility of very heavy rainfall in Rangpur division and adjacent upstream for the next 24 hours. Due to this, the water level of Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers may rise rapidly in the next 24 hours.

In this situation, the water of Teesta River in Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur and Kurigram districts may flow in the plain warning limit and some low areas may be flooded in addition to the respective Char areas of the districts.

Apart from this, the water level of other major rivers of Rangpur division is also increasing, said the Flood Forecasting and Warning Center. However, in the next 24 hours the water of these rivers may flow below the tidal limit and the water level may decrease in the next day.

The water level of Brahmaputra river and its downstream Yamuna river in Rangpur division is also increasing. However, it is flowing below the boundary line. Brahmaputra-Yamuna water level may remain stable for next 5 days. Also, the water level of the Ganga in Rajshahi division is decreasing and the water level of the Padma downstream is stable. Also it is flowing below the boundary line.

In this situation, the water level of Ganga-Padma river may decrease slowly for the next 2 days, and the water level may stabilize in the next day and increase in the next 2 days. However, the water of these rivers may flow below the danger line, said the Flood Forecasting and Warning Center.

Apart from Rangpur, the water levels of Surma and Kushiara rivers in Sylhet division are rising and flowing below the flood line, the Flood Forecasting and Warning Center said. The water level of these rivers may decrease in the next 3 days. Besides, the water levels of other major rivers Manu, Khoai and Dhalai are decreasing. Besides, the water level of Someswari, Bhulai rivers is increasing and the water level of Sarigoin, Kangs rivers is stable. The water of these rivers is flowing below the danger line and the water level may decrease for the next 3 days.

On the other hand, the water level of Muhuri, Feni, Sangu, Matamuhuri, Gomti rivers of Chittagong division is decreasing. And Halda river water level is stable. There is a low trend of heavy rainfall over Chittagong division and adjacent upstream for the next 3 days. As a result, the water level of rivers in Chittagong division may decrease during this time. Apart from this, as there is no low pressure in the Bay of Bengal area, the flood forecasting and warning center has also predicted that the coastal rivers of Barisal and Khulna divisions may observe normal tides for the next 3 days.
