A girder of the under-construction Bus Rapid Transit project on the city's airport road collapsed, leaving six workers injured on Sunday BANGLADESH NEWS
Six people including two Chinese workers were injured after a portion of a launching girder of the under-construction Bus Rapid Transit line 3 collapsed on Sunday at the airport area in the capital.
Dhaka Bus Rapid Transit Company Limited managing director Shafiqul Islam said that the incident of the collapse of the launching girder at the airport area occurred around 10:30 am.
“A total of six staff of the project were injured and five of them are now admitted to Evercare Hospital in Bashundhara Residential Area and one to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR) in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar. One of the Chinese nationals received head injuries,” he said.
However, project officials claimed that their injuries were not severe.
BRT Project Director ASM Illias Hossain said the workers were installing the girder between two pillars at the project’s airport segment since morning. The structure collapsed when the girder fell on it, injuring the workers.
“Among the injured, two were Chinese nationals, but their injuries are not severe,” he said.
The Roads and Highways Department (RHD), the Bangladesh Bridge Authority (BBA), and the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) are implementing the country’s first BRT project under four packages.
Two Chinese contractors under the RHD were implementing one of the packages where the girder collapsed.
The project is being implemented to ease traffic movement between Gazipur and the airport, within the latest deadline of completion by December 2022.
