While it is important to win a series, it is equally important to develop future prospects for the team at the same time, Bangladesh head coach Russell Domingo have mentioned that.

For a long time, the main problem for Bangladesh has been their lack of foresight in planning. Talks of enriching the pipeline and development of prospects or even long-term planning with big ICC events in mind are very common during any BCB-arranged presser.

And ahead of the Tigers’ first of their three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka, which starts today, the same topic was revisited by the Bangladesh head coach Domingo.

Domingo has come under heavy scrutiny due to the Tigers’ string of losses in recent outings, with questions raised regarding his tactics and approach.

And ahead of the crucial Sri Lanka series, the 46-year-old South African coach stressed the importance of developing future prospects while aiming to win the series.

“Winning right now is always important. But, you have also got to have one eye in the future as well. And sometimes we need to be a little bit more aware and not always [solely] focus on the immediate (future) or even sometimes we focus on the past. We have got to look forward as well,” said Domingo at the pre-series press conference on Saturday.

More often than not, the bulk of contributions in Bangladesh’s winning cause come from the likes of Mushfiqur Rahim, Tamim Iqbal, Shakib Al Hasan or Mahmudullah Riyad. Despite having more than five to six years of experience in international cricket, the likes of Liton Das or Soumya Sarkar could not yet turn themselves into regular performers for the side.

And Domingo believes that it is time that Bangladesh starts preparing for life after the quartet of Tamim, Shakib, Mushfiqur and Riyad as they might not be available after a few years.

“This is an important series and we know that there are points [for the ODI super league] up for grab. It is a balancing act as performances now are very important, but also the development of the team going forward is equally important. Who knows, in two years time you might not have Shakib, Tamim, Riyad or Mushfiqur available. And you have got to make sure that you develop some other players who can step into those roles and you have to be careful how you manage that,” added Domingo.
