The government has decided to quickly withdraw the speech offence-related cases filed under the Cyber Act. Apart from that, if anyone is arrested in these cases, he will also be released immediately through the legal process.
This information was informed in the press release of the Ministry of Law on Monday (September 30).
According to the notification, among the cases, the cases filed due to free expression through digital media have been identified as 'speech offences' and fraud through computer hacking or any other digital device as 'computer offences'.
According to the Ministry of Law, a total of 5 thousand 818 cases are ongoing in 8 cyber tribunals of the country under the 'Information and Communication Technology Act, 2006', 'Digital Security Act, 2018' and 'Cyber Security Act, 2023' till last August.
At present, a total of 1,340 cases related to speech offenses are ongoing, out of which 461 cases are under investigation by investigative agencies and 879 cases are under trial in 8 cyber tribunals of the country.
The current government has decided to quickly withdraw the cases related to speech offences. It is said in the notification that out of 1,340 cases related to speech offences, 879 pending cases will be withdrawn quickly through the coordination of the Ministry of Law and the Ministry of Home Affairs. 461 cases under investigation will be directed to the investigation officer for speedy disposal by submitting the final report.
The Ministry of Law also said that if anyone is arrested in these cases, he will be released immediately through this process.
