90 percent of mobile towers in Feni are inoperable due to flood



90 percent mobile network towers are not working in Feni due to severe floods. Almost all areas of the district have been cut off due to lack of electricity. Law enforcement forces and volunteers are also struggling to carry out rescue and relief activities.

Meanwhile, the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has not been able to activate the mobile towers even after trying alternative methods including the use of V-SAT.

According to the information of BTRC's Engineering and Operations Department, mobile towers or sites have been reported to be inoperable in 12 districts so far due to floods. The districts are Noakhali, Laxmipur, Feni, Comilla, Brahmanbaria, Chandpur, Chittagong, Khagrachari, Habiganj, Moulvibazar, Sunamganj and Rangamati.

As of Friday (August 23) at 9 am, 1,807 mobile towers in 12 districts of the country have become inoperable due to floods.

Earlier, according to a Thursday night report, 2,250 mobile towers in 12 districts were reported by the regulatory agency BTRC. As such, it has been possible to activate 217 towers under special arrangements.

According to BTRC data, out of 656 mobile towers in Feni, 590 are now down. Only 66 are active. Operators are worried about how long it will be possible to keep them operational.

According to the latest information of BTRC, 380 mobile towers in Noakhali, 533 in Comilla, 54 in Laxmipur, 23 in Brahmanbaria, 47 in Chandpur, 75 in Chittagong, 36 in Khagrachari, 39 in Moulvibazar, 11 in Sunamganj, 17 in Rangamati and two in Habiganj are now out of order.

The Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology said that 10 V-SATs were kept ready. Five of them have been sent to the Feni District Administrator. All possible efforts are being made to maintain telecommunication services using V-sats.

Meanwhile, BTRC has set up a control room to keep telecom services running amid the floods.

According to the organization, an emergency response team of 15 people has been formed in this situation. Who will perform duties in the control room during disaster and post disaster.
