The Appellate Division has upheld the High Court's decision to dismiss four extortion cases against BNP's acting chairman, Tarek Rahman.

On Sunday, January 5, a four-judge bench led by Justice Md. Ashfaqul Islam dismissed the state's leave-to-appeal petition challenging the High Court's verdict.

Additional Attorney General Barrister Anik R. Haque represented the state during the hearing.

These cases were filed in 2007 under the military-backed caretaker government by various plaintiffs at Gulshan, Kafrul, Shahbagh, and Dhanmondi police stations. The validity of the cases was questioned under Section 561A of the Code of Criminal Procedure, leading to the High Court's intervention.

On October 23, a dual bench of Justices AKM Asaduzzaman and Syed Enayetur Rahim of the High Court had dismissed the four cases against Tarek Rahman. The state subsequently filed a leave-to-appeal, arguing that the High Court's verdict was incorrect.
