A ruling Awami League lawmaker on Wednesday spoke in the parliament hanging a placard reading a slogan demanding strong and sustainable embankment in his area to save the people’s lives and livelihoods from water surges during cyclones and natural disasters.
The lawmaker from Bangladesh’s coastal Patuakhali-3 constituency, SM Shahjada, appeared in the house hanging the placard from his neck that read ‘[We] have no other demand. [We] want embankment, not relief.’
Participating in a general discussion on the proposed national budget for 2021-22 fiscal year, in support of the people of his locality, the lawmaker said that people of his area also hanged the same placards demanding embankment.
The lawmaker recently faced serious anger when he went to his constituency with relief materials for the cyclone Yaas affected people.
Some other lawmakers, including AL lawmaker from Khulna-6 constituency Akhteruzzaman Babu, also experienced such protests from people demanding embankment in coastal areas.
