A Dhaka court has denied bail to actor Shamsunnahar Smrity, better known by her screen name Pori Moni, and sent her to jail in a narcotics case. The court of Metropolitan Magistrate Dhiman Chnadra Mondal also ordered the actor’s aide Ashraful Islam Dipu to jail in the same case.
Investigators produced the Dhallywood actor and her aide in court on Friday following the end of a two-day remand but did not seek more time to interrogate her.
CID inspector Kazi Golam Mostafa, the investigating officer, told the court, “Important information have been gleaned from the suspects, which cannot be disclosed for the sake of the probe. The suspects should not be released on bail.”
The actor’s counsel Md Mujibur Rahman argued that his client was not involved in any criminal conduct. The court scrapped the bail petition before sending the actor and her aide to jail.
Police brought Pori Moni and Dipu to Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court premises around 11.30am and kept them at the lock-up until the court convened in the afternoon.
On Tuesday, the court had granted investigators two more days to interrogate Pori Moni and Dipu after the completion of a four-day remand.
She denied the drug-related charges and blamed the media for turning a blind eye to her misery while leaving the courtroom that day.
"The media is watching everything but not doing anything while I am being framed on false charges," she said.
Pori Moni recently hit the headlines after accusing a businessman of trying to rape and murder her at the Dhaka Boat Club.
Police later arrested Nasir Uddin Mahmood, a member of the club, in a case filed by her. He later secured bail.
On August 4, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) raided Pori Moni’s home in the capital’s Banani neighbourhood and detained her allegedly with bottles of liquor, Yaba pills and LSD blots.
The elite police unit said the raid was conducted based on information gleaned from Sharful Hasan alias Mishu Hasan and his accomplice Md Masudul Islam alias Jishan, who were arrested the previous day on charges of carrying out illicit activities through DJ parties.
In a near simultaneous raid, the same day at Banani, movie producer Nazrul Islam Raz and his manager Sabuj Ali was arrested.
RAB claimed that Raz ran a ring that used to host DJ parties in upscale Dhaka neighbourhoods and supply drugs, using the parties as a cover.
The elite police unit brought drugs-related charges against Pori Moni and her aide Dipu in a case filed with the Banani police station on August 6.
The Detective Branch was given charge of the investigation but the CID was put on it later as an inquiry was opened after Additional Deputy Commissioner Md Golam Saklain Shithil was removed from the DB for his ‘unprofessional conduct’ with the actor.
