After nearly three months of closure, Islamic University (IU) students are set to return to academic activities. Classes and exams will resume online from Tuesday and offline from next week, according to a decision made by the Deans' Committee.
The decision made during a meeting held at the office of Professor Dr. A.K.M. Matinur Rahman, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Convener of the Deans' Committee, on Sunday, September 1st, at 11 AM. The meeting was attended by several deans, including Dr. A.B.M. Siddiqur Rahman Ashrafi, Dean of the Faculty of Theology and Islamic Studies; Professor Dr. Emtaj Hossain, Dean of the Faculty of Arts; Professor Dr. Md. Rezwanul Islam, Dean of the Faculty of Biological Sciences; Ms. Kamrun Naher, Dean of the Faculty of Science; Dr. Md. Manjurul Haque, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology; Professor Dr. Khandakar Touhidul Anam, Dean of the Faculty of Law; and Professor Dr. Shelina Nasrin, Dean of the Faculty of Business Administration.
The resumption of classes comes after students began protesting the prolonged closure, fearing session jams due to the lack of academic activities. According to university regulations, the reopening of classes and exams typically requires approval from the Syndicate, chaired by the Vice-Chancellor. In the absence of a Vice-Chancellor, the Deans' Committee decided to restart academic activities in consultation with the students.
The committee has appointed Dr. A.B.M. Siddiqur Rahman Ashrafi, Dean of the Faculty of Theology and Islamic Studies, to oversee the university's administrative and financial responsibilities. The appointment was made based on seniority among the deans, with the next senior dean expected to take over in Allafi’s absence. However, Dr. Ashrafi has been instructed to make decisions in consultation with the other deans, ensuring no unilateral decisions are made.
Classes will commence online from Tuesday, with a full return to offline activities expected the following week.
