Remittances sent by expatriate workers increased to USD 21.61 billion in FY 2023-24. Finance Minister Abul Hasan Mahmud Ali gave this information in the proposed budget speech on Thursday (June 6).
The finance minister said that remittances sent by expatriate workers are playing an important role in making the country's economy self-reliant. Expatriate income was USD 10.99 billion in FY 2009-10 which doubled to USD 21.61 billion in FY 2023-24.
Mahmud Ali said that the government has allocated Tk 500 crore in favor of Pravasi Kalyan Bank to provide loans to workers returning from abroad on easy terms.
Regarding the creation of women-friendly workplaces in the country, the Finance Minister said that the 'Employment Injury Insurance' scheme for women has been launched on a pilot basis to protect them from the risk of injury at work.
Mahmud Ali said that a target of 1,550 factories in the garment sector has been set in the financial year 2024-25 to ensure a decent working environment
