The one-day series opener between Bangladesh Emerging Cricket team and visiting Ireland Wolves had been abandoned after 30 overs at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram after one of the players’ coronavirus test returned positive.

Ireland all-rounder Ruhan Pretorius was on the field as part of the Irish XI when it was learned that he tested Covid-19 positive. The player gave his sample along with others on Thursday. Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) physician Manzur Hossain confirmed the news that a player was tested positive, without revealing his identity.

BCB’s chief executive officer (CEO) Nizamuddin Chowdhury Shujan told the Bangladesh News that they had little choice but to call off the match because of the timing of the test report and confirmed that the other members of the two sides would be tested again before Sunday’s next one-dayer. “The player concerned was taken to isolation immediately as part of the protocol,” Nizamuddin Chowdhury said. “The report [for Pretorius] arrived slightly later in the morning, which left us with no choice,” Chowdhury told the local national English daily.

The match, which was being aired on the BCB's official YouTube channel, stopped abruptly at the end of the 30th over of the first innings – with the BCB Emerging team at 122 for 4 at that stage. The details emerged later, as well as the confirmation that the Ireland players had decided not to complete the game once they came to know of Pretorius’ test result, reports cricinfo.

Ireland Wolves are on a month-long tour of Bangladesh when they are scheduled to play a four-day match, five one-dayers and two T20 matches. They already played the four-day game of the tour, and this was the first of the five-match one-day series against the Bangladesh Emerging Team.

The next matches slotted for March 7, 9, 12 and 14. The two sides are also scheduled to play two T20s on March 17 and 18. According to the BCB source, the board is planning to go ahead with the original schedule as planned.
