Bangladesh legends led by Mohammad Rafique left Dhaka for Dehradun in India to play the maiden edition of the Road Safety World Series on Saturday. The six-nation tournament, comprising former cricketers is scheduled to start on March 5. Bangladesh will face host India in the opening match. The first edition of the Road Safety World Series with the participation of the former cricketers started in 2020 but the tournament was postponed midway in the wake of the devastating coronavirus pandemic.
The competition is starting anew this time around. Bangladesh have been picked in place of Australia who pulled them out of the tournament citing the corona-related concerns and travel restrictions of the country.
Apart from host India and Bangladesh former cricketers, the players from South Africa, West Indies, Sri Lanka and England are also taking part in the newly-introduced tournament. Legends like Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara will play in the tournament which will be a big boost for the popularity and intensity of the meet.
Bangladesh Team have been formed by the veteran cricketers left-arm spinner Abdur Razzak, who recently joined BCB stint as third selector of the BCB selection panel with former captions Minhajul Abedin Nannu and Habibul Bashar Sumon along with BCB director and its Games Development Committee Chairman Khaled Mahmud Sujon and Khaled Mashud Pilot, Javed Omar Belim, Rajin Saleh, Nafees Iqbal Khan and Aftab Ahmed.
According to the schedule, 12 matches will be held in the group stage till March 16. There will be semi-finals on March 16 and 17 with the top four teams. The final of the tournament will be held on March 21. All matches will start at 7:00 pm Bangladesh time to be played in Raipur.
