Newborn rescued from a Bagerhat tea stall

Police have rescued a newborn girl who was left on a carom board at a tea stall in Bagerhat on Tuesday.

The newborn is currently undergoing treatment at the Bagerhat Sadar Hospital. Meanwhile, several couples have applied to the Bagerhat Child Welfare Board to adopt the rescued baby girl, reports our Bagerhat correspondent. Bagerhat Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Azizur Rahman, Deputy Director Md Rafiqul Islam and some other government officials went to visit the newborn at the hospital. Bagerhat Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge KM Azizul Islam said, “We got the news around 3am today through a phone call from a local woman named Liza. She said that a newborn was lying on a carom board inside Saidul's tea stall in Chitli Baitpur area. We immediately rescued the newborn from the spot and admitted her to Bagerhat Sadar Hospital.

Bagerhat Sadar Hospital Child Consultant Khan Shihan Mahmud said, the age of the newborn is around two days and they are providing necessary treatment. The child is safe now, he added. Bagerhat Deputy Commissioner, Mohammad Azizur Rahman said that the newborn will undergo treatment at the hospital, and will be guarded by police for the time being. Several couples applied to adopt the newborn. The next decision will be taken by the Child Welfare Board, he added.
