Hindu village vandalize: Main accused 'Swadhin Member' arrested

Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has arrested Shahidul Islam Swadhin alias Swadhin, a prominent UP member, in connection with the attack on a Hindu village in Shalla, Sunamganj. He was arrested from Kulaura in Moulvibazar district on Saturday morning, said PBI Special Superintendent of Police in Sylhet. Khaled Uz Zaman informed. He said, “The main accused in the attack on Noagaon village in Shalla is Shahidul Islam Swadhin. After his arrest, he was brought from Kulaura to the PBI's Sylhet office. ”

Shahidul Islam Swadhin's house is in Nachni village of Dirai upazila next to Shalla. He is the president of the local Ward Juba League and a member of the Union Parishad.

After the incident of vandalism and looting of Hindu houses in Noagaon, Shalla on March 17, the name of an independent member came up as the helper of the attackers.

Swadhin was also accused in a case filed by the chairman of the local Habibpur Union Parishad the day after the attack.

According to a Facebook post, 70-80 houses were vandalized and furniture was vandalized in Noagaon village of Shalla upazila on Wednesday morning. Citing locals, police said at the time that "Hefazat-e-Islami followers" carried out the attack.

Shalla Police Station OC Nazmul Haque said some central leaders including Amir Junaid Babungari and Joint Secretary General Mamunul Haque went to a conference organized by Hefazat-e-Islam in Dirai Upazila last Monday. A local Hindu youth posted a post on Facebook criticizing Mamunul Haque's statement at the conference.
