A terrible fire broke out in a market of Shalfa Bazar in Sherpur, Bogura. Four shops of the market were gutted in the fire reported on Saturday. An estimated 13 lakh taka worth of goods were burnt to ashes.
The blaze started at around 9pm on Saturday (March 26) at Harej Uddin Market in Shalfa Bazar of Khanpur Union in the upazila adjacent to the Sherpur-Dhunat regional road. Within moments the fire spread throughout the market. Later, with the help of local people, members of the Fire Service and Civil Defense rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control after an hour-long effort.
Speaking to the victims and locals, it is learned that Abu Hanif, a resident of Shalfa village, set up a market three or four years ago. Harej Uddin Market was named after his father. The shops were then rented out to local traders. But on Saturday the market suddenly caught fire. Within moments, the fire spread and four shops were completely burnt down. At one stage, the people in the market started shouting when they saw the flames. They also tried to put out the fire. Later the local fire service station was informed. Meanwhile, Bablu Mia's drug store at Harej Uddin Market, Jahangir Islam's cotton shop, Subal Sheel's saloon and Rabiul Islam's clothes shop were burnt to ashes. The victims claimed that there was a loss of Tk 13 lakh.
Ratan Hossain, station officer of Sherpur Fire Service and Civil Defense, confirmed the incident and said it was initially thought that the fire may have started from a short circuit. The fire was brought under control after an hour-long effort. But they were informed a little late. So before the fire service personnel reached the spot, four shops and goods of Tinsed Market were burnt. However, their rescue operation has saved other shops in the market and nearby houses from being set on fire, he said.
