Flight operations, including take-off and landing, have been suspended at Sylhet Osmani International Airport as the flood water has reached near the runway.
Flood situation in Sylhet region has taken a serious turn due to onrush of water from the upstream and torrential rains over the last several days.
All flights have been suspended at the airport until 12 midnight on June 20. Sylhet Osmani International Airport Manager Hafiz Ahmed confirmed the information to BSS.
Sources concerned said the flight operation at the airport continued till Friday afternoon. But the airport's runway shoulders have gone under water.
As the flood situation in Sylhet deteriorates, the army has been deployed for rescue and relief operations. They have started the rescue operation from noon on Friday, Sylhet Deputy Commissioner (DC) Md. Mujibur Rahman told BSS.
He said that the cooperation of the navy has also been sought. Rain continues in Sylhet and water of rivers and haors is rising rapidly. Surma river water is flowing over the danger mark. In 24 hours, the water level has increased from one to one and a half feet.
Sylhet city, 20 upazilas and two municipalities have been inundated due to continuous rains and floods. At least 25 lakh people have been stranded due to this.
