A Dhaka court today (May 15) canceled bail order and send 5 people including former MP of Narsingdi-2 Constituency Kamrul Ashraf Poton to jail in a case filed by Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) for allegedly embezzling fertilizer worth around Tk 581 crore.
Senior Special Judge Mohammad Jaglul Hossain passed the order.
On December 6, Judge Faisal Atiq bin Quader of the same court granted them bail. But today the court canceled their bail and sent them to jail.
The other convicts are the General Manager of Poton Traders, Shahadat Hossain, General Manager, Nazmul Alam Badal, North Bengal representative of the organization, Sohbar Hossain and Khulna and Nawapara representatives, Ataur Rahman.
Tapas Kumar Pal, additional public prosecutor of the court, confirmed the matter.
On November 26 last year, the deputy director of the ACC Rafikuzzaman filed the case at the Commission's Dhaka-1 office against 5 people including former MP Poton.
They have been charged under section 409/420/109 of the Penal Code in the case.
The accused imported urea fertilizer from Saudi Arabia, Qatar and United Arab Emirates in the fiscal year 2021-2022 in collusion with each other but did not supply the fertilizer to the BFA warehouse in violation of the terms of the contract.
Poton and his associates embezzled 71, 801 tons of fertilizer worth 581 crore 58 lakh 9 thousand 64 taka by giving false information to Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC) that fertilizer is in transit, case statement said.
