A clash broke out between the supporters of a municipality mayor and mayor aspirant in Brahmanbaria's Kasba Upazila on Friday morning, during a program arranged for smart card distribution in presence of Law Minister Anisul Huq.
At least 20 people were injured and multiple motorcycles and local establishments vandalized in the clash, which continued intermittently, starting from the Kasba Upazila Parishad premises at around 11 am.
Locals said the supporters of Kasba Municipality Mayor Emran Uddin Jewel and Kasba Upazila Jubo League President MA Aziz gathered in front of the Upazila Parishad office on the occasion of the arrival of Law Minister Anisul Haque on Friday morning.
Both Jewel and Aziz are hoping for Awami League's nomination in the upcoming Kasba municipality mayoral elections.
At one point, their supporters engaged in a clash for an unknown reason, but it stopped after a while. Later at around 11:30 am, the law minister came to the Upazila Parishad office to attend the pre-arranged function.
The clash broke out again during the ceremony and continued intermittently.
Meanwhile, the minister quickly left the venue for his village home Paniarup in Kasba. When informed, police reached the spot, fired tear shells, and charged batons to bring the situation under control.
Confirming the matter, Kasba police station OC Alamgir Hossain said: “The situation is now normal. Additional police forces have been deployed.”
