Agriculture Department officials are expecting a bumper production of potatoes in the district during this Robi season. Farmers cultivated potato on 4,985 hectares of land with a production target of 1,03,090 tonnes of potato.
According to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources favourable weather, using of balance fertilizer and in absence of cold injury, one kind of disease which infects the potato plants, could give the bumper production.
This year farmers brought 155 hectares more land under the cultivation in the district than the cultivation of last year.
DAE office said 1350 hectares of land have been brought under potato cultivation in Jamalpur Sadar upazila while 420 hectares in Sarishabari, 650 hectares in Melandaha, 430 hectares in Islampur, 270 hectares in Dewanganj, 255 hectares in Madarganj and 1610 hectares in Bakshiganj upazila.
Additional deputy director of DAE Mohammad Sakhawatul Ikram said farmers cultivated six to seven varieties of potato seed this year.
He said if the weather remains well additional potato production will be produced which will exceed the production target this year in the district.
Farmers will start harvesting potato from mid February and will continue till mid March, he added.
