In seven months of 2020, as many as 13886 child marriages took place in 84 upazillas of 21 districts of Bangladesh. This information has portrayed in a survey titled ‘Rapid Analysis of Child Marriage Status: Corona pandemic 2020’.
The result of the survey was published through a webinar on Thursday. The survey was conducted and reported by the non-governmental organization Foundation for the People (MJF) in association with the United Nation’s Population Fund (UNFPA), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and Plan International. MJF Executive Director Shaheen Anam presided over the webinar. MJF Coordinator Arpita Das and Senior Manager Giyasuddin Ahmed highlighted the insights of the survey.
The survey was conducted in Dhaka, Manikganj, Cumilla, Khulna, Barishal, Borguna, Rangamati, Kishoreganj, Sirajganj, Chittagong, Lakhsmipur, Jamalpur, Jessore, Naogaon, Kushtia, Kurigram, Neelfamari, Thakurgaon, Gaibandha, Sunamganj, and Sylhet.
In total, 21,258 people have taken part in the survey. Unmarried girls between the ages of 10 and 19, girls who have been married before the age of 18, parents between the ages of 10 and 19, local government representatives, UNOs, local officials of the Department of Women's Affairs, marriage registrars, local leaders, teachers. , Police etc had participated in the survey.
