The government on Wednesday purchased 125 lakh litres of soyabean oil and 5,000 tonnes of lentil which will be sold at subsidised rate by the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh.
The cabinet committee on government purchases approved three proposals from TCB under the ministry of commerce to settle the procurement made through direct purchase method, said cabinet division additional secretary Md Abdul Barik.
The meeting was presided over by finance minister AHM Mustafa Kamal.
Abdul Barik said TCB had to procure the food items without any tender due to ‘emergency needs’ of the country.
TCB needed 20 lakh litres of soyabean oil monthly to maintain its open market sales of limited food items at subsidised rates, he added.
Demand for TCB food items has increased since the low and the fixed income groups have been facing sufferings because of high inflation of 7 per cent in June and July.
Inflation will rise further since the government increased fuel oil prices by around 50 per cent from the first week of this month that has already affected prices of daily essential items.
