The girl's family alleged that influential people tried to cover up the incident
A schoolgirl has filed a case of rape that took place in Sylhet's Zakiganj on Monday.
The rape survivor, a 10th grader, lodged the case with Zakiganj police station on Wednesday night, said Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abul Kashem.
Police will take necessary action in this regard, he said.
According to the girl's family, Salman Ahmad, 18, a resident of Rarai village, and his associates picked her up forcibly when she went to the toilet outside their house on Monday night.
The next morning, family members of Salman brought the girl back in an unconscious state.
The girl's family alleged that influential people, including the union parishad (UP) member, tried to cover up the incident and barred them to resort to legal action.
A relative of the rape survivor said they could not disclose the incident immediately for the fear of influential people.
As the condition of the girl deteriorated, they admitted her to the One-stop Crisis Centre of Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College and Hospital, he said.
"The influential people were enraged over the matter. They beat up another relative of the girl taking him to the house of the UP member. The family of the rapist threatened to file a case against the girl's family as well," he added.
Zakiganj Sadar UP member Shamsul Haq denied the allegation of covering up the rape incident.
He said the family members of the girl vandalized the house of Salman and they were trying to settle the incidents of rape and vandalism.
"Arbitration was held in this regard, but that bore no result," he said.
Shamsul said none was assaulted in the arbitration, rather an argument took place over the hospital admission of the girl.
Zakiganj police station OC Abul Kashem said he is not aware of the harassment the family of the girl has been subjected to.
Police will take action against those who are trying to cover up the rape and harassing the girl's family.
