Residents of Savar municipality held a human chain demanding the extension of the MRT-5/MRT-6 metro rail project to Radio Colony/Nabinagar in Savar, Dhaka.
The human chain was formed at Amtala of Savar Upazila Parishad at 11am on Thursday. Hundreds of locals participated in the event.
Md Kamruzaman Khan, coordinator of the Savar Citizen Committee and president of the Crime Reporters' Association of Bangladesh (Crab), chaired the human chain.
The speakers urged the extension of the MRT-5 project from Hemayetpur in Savar to Radio Colony/National Martyrs' Memorial in Nabinagar, Savar municipal area.
If complications arise, they proposed extending the MRT-6 project from Uttara’s Diabari to Savar Radio Colony via Birulia, with subsequent stages reaching the National Martyr’s Memorial in Nabinagar.
In cases where overland expansion is unfeasible, they suggested integrating a portion into the metro rail project underground.
Crab President Md Kamruzaman Khan said that applications have been submitted to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, urging for the metro rail project's extension to Savar's municipal boundary.
A notice has been served to the principal secretary to the prime minister, and similar communication has been conveyed through letters and direct communication to the railway minister, secretary, and director-general.
Savar's residents, who have long been underserved, anticipate rail services as part of the government's Smart Bangladesh initiative. They emphasized that their program would persist until their demands are met.
