A journalist died after allegedly being run over by a speeding vehicle in the Begunbari area of Dhaka’s Hatirjheel in the early hours of Wednesday.

The deceased is Habibur Rahman, 40, son of Mohammad Piar Mia of Brahmanpara upazila in Cumilla. He was a senior reporter of ‘Daily Somoyer Alo’.

Assistant sub-inspector at Hatirjheel police station, Kayes Uddin said, ‘Passersby found Habib in a critical condition around 2:40am and alerted the police.’

Habib was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.

Police suspect that Habib, also a former organising secretary of Dhaka Reporters' Unity, was run over by an unidentified vehicle.

The body has been kept at the DMCH morgue for an autopsy, said Bachchu Mia, inspector at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital police outpost.

Awami League (AL) General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Wednesday expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death of senior reporter of the Bengali daily Somoyer Alo and former organising secretary of Dhaka Reporters' Unity (DRU) Habibur Rahman Habib. In a condolence message, he prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family.

BSS reports, Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud on Wednesday expressed profound shock and sorrow at the death of senior reporter of Bengali daily ‘Dainik Samayer Alo’ Habibur Rahman Habib. In a condolence message, the minister said, "I knew the youth journalist- Habibur Rahman. He was organizing secretary of Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU). The sad demise of him is really very pathetic." Hasan, also Awami League joint general secretary, prayed for eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family. Habibur died in a motorbike accident in the city's Hatirjheel area early Wednesday.
