Journalist arrested in Khulna for insulting PM

The move comes weeks after cartoonist Kishore, sued under the draconian Digital Security Act, got bail

Police have arrested Md Naimur Rahman, Bijoy TV Khulna correspondent, for reportedly insulting the prime minister.

A case has been filed in his name under the Special Powers Act at Khanjahan Ali police station in Khulna.

Khanjahan Ali police station OC Prabir Kumar Biswas said the accused in the case are Md Naimur Rahman, Abu Saeed Hawlader Abbas, Md Shahin and 3/4 others.

Naimur has been sent to jail and an operation is underway to arrest the other accused, he added.

According to sources, there was a boat sign poster of Sheikh Anisur Rahman, a chairman candidate, with a picture of the prime minister in front of the temporary office of Sheikh Anisur Rahman in Fulbarigate Old TT College Road. 

On Monday afternoon, Naimur, Abbas, Shahin and 3/4 others allegedly insulted the prime minister and the Awami League and reportedly made fun of the government for being a failure.

When the locals protested, the accused attacked them and snatched Tk6,520 and a watch from a businessman named Md Korban Ali.

At one stage, the people caught Naimur and the rest of the accused fled. Naimur was later handed over to the police.  

Md Jahangir Kabir Khan filed the case against three accused and other identified men in this regard.
