General students of Dhaka University (DU) have taken a stand at Shahbag intersection in the capital to demand cancellation of quota in government jobs.

July 2 (Tuesdayat) 4 pm, under the banner of ordinary students, they came to Shahbagh from Dhaka University campus via Neelkhet Science Lab.

They demand that the High Court should cancel the 56 percent quota order and restore the 30 percent freedom fighter quota in the first and second class government jobs and reinstate the 2018 circular. Otherwise the students will continue to protest.

Akhtar Hossain, Central Convener of Democratic Student Shakti and former social service secretary of Daksu, said that this quota system along with freedom fighter quota in first and second class government jobs is an injustice to ordinary talented students. The decision to cancel the quota system was declared illegal by the High Court on June 5, after it was canceled in the face of Dhaka University students' agitation. Through this, the future of meritorious students has been pushed into uncertainty. We want this decision to be revoked immediately.

He said, this movement of ours is a completely non-political movement. We want the government to accept our logical demands. The student will return to the reading table. And if the demand is not accepted, then we will not return home.

Incidentally, on June 5, the High Court declared the decision to cancel the quota system including freedom fighter quota in first and second class government jobs illegal. The High Court bench of Justice KM Kamrul Quader and Justice Khizir Hayat pronounced the ruling as 'correct'.

However, the angry students protested immediately that afternoon, rejecting the High Court's verdict. The next day too, thousands of university students gathered in front of the Raju sculpture of the university with the same demand. After the end of the summer and Eid-ul-Azha vacations, the students started protesting on the streets as a pre-announced program against the resumption of quota.
