Derogatory remark on Prophet: JnU student jailed for 5 years

A Dhaka court has sentenced suspended Jagannath University (JnU) student Tithy Sarkar to five years' imprisonment in a case filed for making derogatory remarks about Islam and Prophet Muhammad (Pbuh).

Zulfikar Hayat, judge of Dhaka's cyber tribunal, issued the verdict on Monday (May 13).

According to the case statement, on November 5, 2020, a person named Abu Musa Rifat filed a case against the accused in the cyber tribunal of Dhaka. 

It was also stated that the accused Tithi Sarkar, a student of the 2017-2018 academic year of Zoology Department of Jagannath University made remark from her Facebook page from October 16-23 insulting Prophet Muhammad which violated religious sentiments.

After that, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the police arrested Tithi.

Meanwhile, Tithi has been suspended from her organization Chhatra Odhikar Parishad for hurting religious sentiments.

Tithi Sarkar was also expelled from the university on the same ground in an order signed by the registrar on October 26 that year.
