The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police has officially launched their investigation into the fire incident at Hashem Foods Ltd, a sister concern of Sajeeb Group, in Narayanganj’s Rupganj that killed 52 people.

CID Additional Deputy Inspector General Imam Hossain (Dhaka Division) confirmed the matter after inspecting the fire scene on Friday afternoon.

He said the CID has already begun collecting physical evidence from the fire scene, statements from witnesses and other related data critical to the investigation.

“An investigation is underway to identify the possible cause(s) of the fire and the CID will take necessary action if any person or organization is found responsible,” he added.

The case was handed over to the CID for close observation.

Earlier, the government had formed three probe committees to investigate the fire incident.

On July 8, at least 49 workers -- trapped on the third floor with its only exit locked -- died when the massive fire engulfed the factory. Three others succumbed to injuries they sustained after jumping off the six-storey building. Over 50 others were injured in the incident that shook the world.

Eight people, including the owner of Sajeeb Group and his sons, were arrested and remanded in a case filed over the fire incident.
