The Anti-Terrorism Unit (ATU) arrested an active member of the banned militant outfit Ansar al-Islam on Wednesday from Kalabagan area in the capital.

The arrestee was identified as Nayem Ali, alias Nayem bin Sadeq, 19.

Wahida Parvin, assistant superintendant of police, Media and Awareness Wing, confirmed the matter to the media through a press release on Thursday.

The ATU statement said that Nayem Ali had been working for a long time to establish a caliphate in Bangladesh through online extremist propaganda and anti-state conspiracies aimed at establishing 'Gazwatul Hind'.

Besides, he used to carry out anti-state and anti-government, religiously provocative and extremist propaganda using fake identities through social media, and was recruiting members for Ansar al-Islam.

A case was filed against him under the anti-terrorism act with Kalabagan police station, it reads.
