The duo had almost completed the quarantine but left before their Covid-19 test results arrived
Two UK returnees have been fined and sent to jail for violating quarantine in Sylhet.
They were sent to jail for seven days and fined Tk10,000 each. If they fail to pay the fine, they will face seven more days in prison, confirmed Sylhet Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Commissioner (media cell) BM Sharafullah Taher on Tuesday.
The duo, Md Abdun Nur, 42, and Alam Hasan Rauf, 36, returned to Bangladesh from London with 138 other passengers on March 22.
They were sent to Hotel Star Pacific at Dargah Gate area of Sylhet city for seven-day institutional quarantine as per government instructions.
On Monday, the last quarantine day, they gave their samples for Covid-19 testing. Before the results arrived, the UK returnees violated the quarantine and left the hotel around 12:30pm on Tuesday.
They could not be reached over the phone and later around 6pm they returned back to the hotel.
On information, Assistant Commissioner and Executive Magistrate (Sylhet) Md Mezbah Uddin reached the hotel, fined and sent the duo to jail for seven days.
Later, Abdun and Alam were taken to the jail around 10pm on Tuesday.
