The prices of different breeds of chicken have been rising for almost two months now. All buyers are unable to purchase the item. At this time the price has increased by about 35 to 40 percent.
Department of Livestock Services thinks that the price instability in the market is due to the decrease in production due to the impact of the Covid pandemic and the increase in the price of poultry feed and chicks after the lockdown. They also think that it may take some more time for the market to return to normal.
Poultry stakeholders have been saying the same thing as the reason for the rise in prices.
Prices of all types of chickens, including broilers, fell by Tk 15 per kg last week, but have risen again this week, retailers said.
Visiting the capital's Karwan Bazar, Mirpur's Pirerbagh, and Borobagh raw markets on Friday, the correspondent saw broiler chickens being sold at Tk 165 to Tk 170 per kg which wasTk 150 last week.
In line with broilers, layer chickens are also being sold at Tk 240 per kg, which was Tk 230 last week.
And the Sonali is being sold at Tk300 per kg, which was Tk300 a month ago. Two months ago, this breed of chicken was available for between Tk 220 and Tk 240.
It has been seen that the price of chicken market has been increasing for the last two months. The volatile market is occasionally declining a little but increasing even more. This week's price was Tk 165 to Tk170.
For the last few years, broiler chickens have been selling at around Tk 120 to Tk 140 per kg.
If the minimum price difference is calculated, the price has increased by about 37 percent in two months and more than 41 percent as the minimum and maximum price. And if you take the maximum price difference of two months, it has increased by more than 20 percent.
Similarly, the price of layer chicken was between Tk 180 to Tk 200 per kg, while the price of Sonalichicken was between Tk 220 to Tk 240 per kg. And the price of Local chicken was fluctuating between Tk350 to Tk450.
Why such price volatility in the chicken market even after the epidemic and lockdown are gone?In response to this question, the Deputy Director (Farm) of the Department of Livestock Services, Jinat Sultana, said that considering the current market price, the chicken market is not in an unusual situation. Instead, chickens were being sold at low prices for a long time during the Kovid period, to the detriment of the farmers.
