Over thousand evidence of money laundering incidents has obtained by Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) in last five years. During the period, over half of the money laundering incidents took place in 2017-18 fiscal year.
BFIU has already sent letters to the law enforcement agencies to take action against those involved in siphonning of money from the country.
According to a BFIU report, 116 money laundering incidents took place in 2019-20 FY while 52 in 2018-19 FY, 677 in 2017-18 FY, 121 in 2016-17 FY and 58 incidents took place in 2015-16 FY.
In half of the incidents, money has been siphoned out of the country.
Besides, different government organisations have given information on 2,290 money laundering incidents in last five years.
Abu Hena Mohammad Razee Hassan, Head of the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU), said a trail of a number of money laundering cases are underway.
"None can be punished if the trial is not completed," he said.
BFIU sources said reports have been sent to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Police, the ACC and Bangladesh Bank to take action against those involved in money laundering.
The reports contain details of assets and investment of launderers abroad.
Banks, financial institutions, insurance companies and money exchange offices every month provide information to the BFIU about suspicious money.
