A Dhaka court on Monday placed another five students on five-day remand each on charges of peddling the hallucinogenic drug LSD. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Atiqul Islam passed the order after Khilgaon police station Sub-Inspector Bodrul Al Amin, the investigation officer of the case, produced the accused before the court with remand prayers.

The defence counsel submitted bail petitions and remand rejection prayers before the court, but they were rejected. The remanded accused are Saiful Islam Saif, 20, SM Manowar Akib Anan, 20, Nazmus Sakib, 20, Nazmul Islam, 24, and BM Sirajus Salekin Topu, 24.

Saif, Anan, and Sakib were arrested from the capital’s Malibagh area on Sunday. Nazmul and Tapu were arrested from Vatara the same day, based on information gleaned from the first three.

Subsequently, Khilgaon police station Sub-Inspector SM Mansurul Karim filed the case against the five accused under Narcotic Control Act.

Earlier in the day, a Dhaka court remanded North South University students Sadman Sakib Rupol, 25, and Ashab Wadud Turjo, 22, and Independent University student Adib Ashraf, 23, for five days on charges of possessing LSD.

On May 27, the three students were arrested on charges of peddling the hallucinogenic drug following the death of 24-year-old Dhaka University (DU) student Hafizur Rahman. DB Inspector Mahbub Alam filed a case with Dhanmondi police station against the three under Narcotic Control Act the same day.

Police said DU student Hafizur and three of his friends took LSD at the Curzon Hall area of the university campus on the night of May 15, and he committed suicide while under the influence of the drug.
