Due to reduced rainfall in Sylhet, the water level in the flooded areas has reduced slightly. However, the flood situation has improved in some parts of the district and has deteriorated in some places. The water of Surma-Kushiara, Sylhet's main river, is flowing over the boundary at six points due to the continued uphill flow from India.
On the surface, it can be seen that there is knee-deep water on the streets of Taltala, Jamtala, Machudighirpar, Upshahar, Jatarpur, Sobahanighat, Mirabazar, Mendibagh, Shibganj, Topkhana, Beterbazar areas of Sylhet city. Residents of these areas say that the water has decreased a little. But it will increase again when it starts raining.
According to data from the Sylhet Water Development Board (PUBO), two major rivers of Sylhet, Surma and Kushiara, are flowing above the marine boundary at six points. And the water of Sari river in Goainghat is below danger level since morning. The water level has gone down a bit.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) of Sylhet Mohammad Mubarak Hossain said that the flood situation of Sylhet has decreased in some places and increased in some places. However, except for one point of the Kushiara river, the water level of the other rivers has decreased compared to before. The administration's relief efforts are continuing in the flood-affected areas. The district administration is keeping a close eye on the flood situation.
Shahid Hatimi, a resident of Sylhet's Jaintapur area and a journalist, told that water has come down from the houses of some people in my upazila. However, in most areas roads and houses are still flooded. I live in Sylhet city. I came to the area the day before Eid. I went and saw that my house's furniture and other necessary things were submerged in water.
Ahmed Chowdhury, a resident of D block in the suburbs of Sylhet city, said that water entered the basement of the house on the day of Eid. Eid ceremony was not done properly for water. There is water in the house even on Thursday. The days are passing like a prisoner, but the water is receding a little.
According to the information of Sylhet district administration till yesterday afternoon, 23 wards of the metropolis and 106 unions of the district were flooded and 8 lakh 25 thousand 256 people were trapped in the flood. Out of 656 shelters in Sylhet district-city, 80 are in the metropolis. 19 thousand 959 people have taken shelter in these shelters. Goainghat Upazila of the district has the most people affected by flood. 1 lakh 23 thousand 800 people of 223 villages of 13 unions of upazila are affected by flood. Among them, 1 thousand 440 people have gone to the shelter. Goainghat upazila road communication with Sylhet district is closed due to submergence of the main main road of the upazila. Companyganj upazila has the most people in shelters. 95 thousand 500 people of 113 villages of 6 unions of upazila have been affected by flood and 7 thousand 303 people are in shelters. Except for the Bangabandhu highway, all the other roads of the upazila are submerged in water. Due to which the people of the remote areas of the upazila could not leave their homes without boats.
Deepak Ranjan Das, executive engineer of Sylhet Water Development Board, told reporters that the water in the rivers has decreased due to the decrease in rainfall in Sylhet and Cherrapunji in India. India's Meghalaya is dependent on rains to improve the flood situation. As a result of the descent of hill slopes, the water of rivers and rivers rises and creates flood situation.
Sylhet Meteorological Department Assistant Meteorologist Shah Md. Sajib Hossain said, 10 millimeters of rain fell in 3 hours from 6 am to 9 am on Thursday. 110.2 millimeters of rain has fallen in the last 24 hours. However, no rainfall was recorded on Wednesday night. Moderate to heavy rain is forecast in Sylhet for the next two days.
