Shakib Al Hasan and Mustafizur Rahman joined the national team’s training ahead of the Sri Lanka home series on Tuesday two days ahead of schedule as the duo got relived from the final two days of their two-week-long quarantine after testing negative for Covid-19 multiple times.
Shakib and Mustafiz were serving a mandatory quarantine in two separate city hotels since returning to Bangladesh from India on April 6 in a chartered flight after the Indian Premier League, where the duo was taking part, got stopped midway due to Covid positive cases in multiple franchises. Bangladesh Cricket Board’s request to curtail their quarantine period was declined by the health authorities as both players were told they would have to stay in quarantine till April 19 and join the rest of the squad the next day, only two days before the first one-day international against Sri Lanka. But after testing free of the virus multiple times and spending 12 days of their quarantine, the duo were allowed to enter the Bangladesh team’s bio-bubble ahead of the series.
But they could hardly flex their muscles as a torrential downpour in the afternoon held them back at the dressing room on the first day of scheduled team training at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur. The cricketers came out of the dressing room after a light drizzle in the afternoon but in a very short time it started raining heavily with lightning, which forced them to return indoors. The Sri Lankan team, which arrived in Dhaka on May 16, are scheduled to start training today in Mirpur after completing their three-day quarantine. The three-match series is part of the ICC World Cup Super League, a qualification competition for the next World Cup in India in 2023.
