All members of the Bangladesh cricket team in Sri Lanka have tested negative in the second round of Covid-19 tests. The visiting side was allowed their first training session in Negombo on Thursday having also completed the three-day mandatory room quarantine. The 21-member Bangladesh squad had a full out training session at facilities which are situated 20 minutes away from the hotel. The long training session ensured all members had some activity to do to shred the rust of having been in the room since their arrival in the island nation Monday. The Bangladesh Cricket Board has involved additional bowlers in the squad as Sri Lanka Cricket decided not to provide local net bowlers for practice sessions as part of the Covid-19 protocols. Bangladesh squad will have another day of practice session at the same facilities Friday, before playing an intra-squad two-day match at Chilaw Marians Cricket Ground Saturday and Sunday.
“The practice match that we have is very important to us because that is the only scope for us to get well adjusted to the weather and condition here. We will get to know the wicket that we can expect in the Test matches,” said top-order Bangladesh batsman Saif Hasan Thursday. The Muslim cricketers in the Bangladesh team are known well for their devotion in following the religion. However, extreme temperature and conditions in the island have forced them to skip fasting on the days of training. It is understood that all Muslim members of the team had fasted on the first day of Ramadan, Wednesday, and that special arrangements for iftaar was made with help from the hotel authority. Bangladesh cricket team travelled to Sri Lanka for the long delayed two-Test series that is part of the World Test Championship.
The series was originally scheduled for July last year but was pushed back due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The series got rescheduled to October-November but failed to materialize as Bangladesh were not ready to comply with the 14-day quarantine in Sri Lanka. Bangladesh cricket team following the camp in Negombo will travel to Kandy Monday where both the Tests will be played. The first Test of the series will be played from Wednesday at Pallakele International Cricket Stadium. The second and final game of the series will begin on April 29 at the same venue.
