The scorching sun in the hot weather has caused untold sufferings to the people, especially to the day-workers and rickshaw pullers who were compelled to go outside the homes for earning livelihood despite the lockdown and also those staying homes as a mild to moderate heat wave has swept over the country on Tuesday.
On the day, Bangladesh’s maximum temperature rose to 40°C as a mild to moderate heat wave swept over Dhaka, Rajshahi and Khulna divisions and the region of Patuakhali on Tuesday and it may continue till today.
According to Bangladesh Met Office rain or thunder showers at one or two places over Sylhet division in the next 24 hours commencing at 9:00 am Tuesday.
The country’s maximum temperature was recorded yesterday by 40.0 degrees Celsius at Jashore under the Khulna division and the minimum temperature on yesterday was recorded by 20.5 degrees Celsius at Gopalgonj and Rajarhat.
According to the met office, Dhaka recorded a maximum temperature of 36.9°C while Rajshahi recorded 39.5°C, Khulna and Chuadanga recorded 39°C, Mongla recorded 38.7°C, Ishwardi recorded 38.5°C and Tangali recorded 38.1°C.
If the mercury in the thermometer rises to 36°C to 38°C, meteorologists call it a mild heat flux. When the temperature rises to 36°C to 40°C, it is called moderate heat flow. And if the temperature exceeds 40°C, the meteorological office considers it as an intense heat wave.
Previously, in the hot season of 2018, the maximum temperature in Rajshahi rose to 40°C on June 15.
“Rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty or squally wind is likely to occur at one or two places over Sylhet division and weather may remain mainly dry with temporary partly cloudy sky elsewhere over the country,” said met office.
Besides, day and night temperature may rise slightly over the country, the release added. As an outlook for the next 72 hours, the BMD predicted: “Rain or thunder showers is likely.”
Maximum rainfall for the last 24 hours till 6 am today was recorded by 09 millimeters (mm) at Sylhet.
