Railway running staff have withdrawn their strike that was called to demand pension and gratuity benefits by including the running allowance with their basic salary. Following the announcement of the withdrawal at midnight on Tuesday, train operations resumed across the country, including in Dhaka, from early Wednesday morning.
According to Kamalapur Station Manager Anwar Hossain, seven trains had already departed from Kamalapur Station by early Wednesday. The first train to leave was the Dhumketu Express, heading towards Rajshahi at 6:30 AM, followed by other trains, all departing on schedule.
However, many passengers were unaware of the late-night decision to call off the strike, resulting in several vacant seats on morning trains. Despite this, passengers expressed relief over the resumption of services.
The running staff had initially called the strike demanding that their pension and gratuity be calculated by including the running allowance with their basic salary. As a result, train operations had been suspended from midnight on Monday, causing severe disruption for thousands of passengers on Tuesday as well.
The strike was eventually withdrawn early Wednesday after assurances that their demands would be addressed. The decision came following a meeting at the residence of Railways Ministry Adviser Muhammad Fawzul Kabir Khan. At around 2:30 AM, the Bangladesh Railway Running Staff and Workers' Union officially announced the withdrawal of the strike.
