Leftist student organizations have launched a siege on the home ministry on March 1 over the death of imprisoned writer Mushtaq Ahmed. The program was called after a rally and blockade at Shahbagh on Friday (February 26). Earlier, leaders and activists of leftist student organizations blockaded Shahbagh from 11 am to 12 noon. This caused traffic jam on the road. The road to Shahbag-Sciencelab was completely closed. At the end of the blockade, the road is normal.
The rally demanded the repeal of the Digital Security Act and a proper investigation into the death of writer Mushtaq in prison. Besides, a torch procession of students was announced at the anti-terrorism Raju sculpture of Dhaka University at 6 pm.
Al-Qadiri Joy, central president of the Socialist Student Front, said, "The murder of writer Mushtaq must be brought to justice immediately. The security law should be repealed and all writers, columnists, bloggers and others detained under the digital security law should be released immediately."
Imran Habib Rumon, former president of the Socialist Student Font said, "Today, the death row convicts have fled the country, they have been released on bail. Bail was not granted even after applying for bail six times." Zahid Sujan, general secretary of the student federation said, "One thing is clear, if your right to speak is taken away, then you are a human being."
Arif Moinuddin, president of the Democratic Students Council said, "It goes without saying that people do not have democratic rights today. I can say for sure that the state has killed this writer. His fault was that he used to write about logic. How many more people will be killed and arrested under the Digital Security Act!"
Writer Mushtaq Ahmed, 53, died at the Kashimpur high security Jail in Gazipur on Thursday. He was imprisoned in a case under the Digital Security Act.
