Short-distance train services resumed today (August 1), 14 days after the passenger train service was suspended on July 18 due to nationwide unrest over the quota reform movement.

The trains started running from Dhaka railway station to various destinations in the country around 7 am.

Dhaka Railway Station Master Shahadat Hossain confirmed the matter.

He said that the commuter trains have left Dhaka for Joydevpur, Brahmanbaria and Chattogram.

However, the commuter train from Dhaka to Narayanganj has not yet started, said the railway official.

Earlier, Iftekhar Alam Rajon, public relations officer (PRO), Ministry of Railways, said, “Local and commuter trains on short-distance routes will run from today during the break of curfew. Inter-city trains will resume service when curfew will be lifted.”

Initially trains will run on Dhaka-Narayanganj, Dhaka-Tangail and some other routes, railway sources said.

On 16 July, rail lines in Dhaka, Gazipur, Chattogram, Feni, Mymensingh, Rangpur and many other areas were blocked amid protests calling for quota reforms. As the situation worsened, train service was suspended from 18 July. Later, on 25 July, the railway authorities decided to resume train service on a limited scale. However, it reversed the decision afterwards.
