Remembrance of the dead in brimming homage

Tribute paid to the army officers who were killed in a brutal massacre during a mutiny at the Border Guard Bangladesh headquarters in Peelkhana a decade ago. On behalf of the President and the Prime Minister, their Military Secretaries laid wreaths at the graves of the slain Army members at the Banani Military Cemetery on Thursday morning.

ISPR said, the President. Abdul Hamid was paid tribute by his military secretary Major General SM Salahuddin Islam. On behalf of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Her military secretary Major General Naqib Ahmed laid a wreath.

Besides, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, Chief of Army Staff General Aziz Ahmed, Acting Chief of Naval Staff Rear Admiral M Abu Ashraf, Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Masihuzzaman Serniabat, BGB Director General Major General Md. Safinul Islam paid homage at Banani. A minute of silence was observed at the end of the wreath-laying.

Relatives of the army officers killed in the Peelkhana massacre also visited the military cemetery in Banani. However, they did not speak in front of the media.

The mutiny started on the morning of February 25, 2009 from the Border Guard BDR's Durbar Hall. It came to an end the next day through various events. The incident killed 64 people, including 57 army officers. After that bloody uprising, the name of the Border Security Force (BDR) was changed. The name of this force is now Border Guard Bangladesh or BGB.

According to ISPR, Milad mahfil and special munajat will be organized on Thursday morning in the central mosques of all the cantonments of the country in the presence of army members of all levels.

Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) headquarters in Peelkhana, including the management of all regions, institutions, sectors and units in the end of the Qurankhani, all BGB mosques and BOP level prayer and milad mahfil will be organized, a BGB press release said. Besides, special prayers and milad will be held at BGB Central Mosque, Dhaka Sector Mosque and Border Guard Hospital Mosque at Peelkhana after Friday.
